The international conference “Group Actions and Dynamics” will take place at CUNY Graduate Center, New York, June 1-5, 2026. This is a Satellite Conference of the ICM 2026 (International Congress of Mathematicians) and part of the “Geometric and Asymptotic Group Theory with Applications”(GAGTA) series of conferences. Group theory studies mathematical objects codifying shapes and symmetries as strings of symbols, and the conference will focus on the broad theme of interactions between group actions and dynamical systems. The conference will bring together experts in several fields to present recent advances to exchange ideas and build collaborations. Many of the participants will be graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and they will have an opportunity to present their results, while interacting with and learning from leading experts in the field.
The main scientific theme will concentrate on the interplay of group theory, dynamics, and analysis, as well as their connections with theoretical computer science. Practical computation with finitely presented groups has been an active area of research for over a century even though many of the computational problems involved are now known to be formally incomputable. For these problems, every algorithm fails for infinitely many inputs, and standard techniques from computer science for estimating the efficiency of algorithms do not apply. Higher-dimensional symbolic dynamics brings new insights to this type of problems, and the conference will disseminate recent progress in this challenging but fundamental problems. Participants in the conference will be encouraged to contribute to international publications targeting general mathematical audience, to disseminate these results.
