We propose to realize a new type of hybrid quantum technology by coherently coupling a single molecule to a superconducting resonator. This project builds on our group’s pioneering work demonstrating strong coupling of atomic ensembles in cryogenic noble-gas crystals to superconducting circuits. By embedding molecular spins into solid cryogenic matrices placed directly above superconducting devices, we will create a platform that combines long intrinsic coherence, chemical tunability, and seamless integration with existing quantum hardware. The proof-of-concept will follow a stepwise approach: first establishing ensemble coupling, then progressively reducing to the single-molecule limit. Demonstrating single-molecule coupling will validate the feasibility of scalable molecular qubits which include nuclear spin memories with storage times potentially orders of magnitude beyond current superconducting memories. Such a capability would address some of the bottlenecks in quantum technologies: reliable nano sized qubits with a long-lived storage of quantum information will significantly improve for example qubit operations, error correction, and distributed quantum communication. The project will also prepare the ground for commercialization through further patent protection (foundational patent PCT/EP2025/066647 filed June 13th, 2025), technology benchmarking against competing platforms, and engagement with quantum hardware companies. The expected outcome are modular molecular size quantum technology components that can be readily integrated into superconducting microwave architectures, positioning Europe at the forefront of the emerging quantum hardware market.
