PhD Student (Exceptional Postdoctoral Candidates Will Also Be Considered) – Structural Mass Spectrometry of Oligonucleotides and Their Therapeutic Applications

University of Geneva

Deadline

15 November 2026

Description

Offer Description: The Biophysical and Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Laboratory at the University of Geneva develops and applies mass spectrometry methods to study the structure, folding, and chemical modifications of nucleic acids. We seek a PhD candidate to develop advanced mass spectrometry methods for the structural characterization of oligonucleotides, including higher-order structures, folding, and fragmentation pathways. Particular emphasis will be placed on therapeutically relevant oligonucleotides, although more fundamental questions related to nucleic acid structure and biophysics may also be addressed. The project combines native mass spectrometry, ion mobility spectrometry, and advanced fragmentation methods. Exceptional postdoctoral candidates will also be considered. Outstanding applicants may alternatively propose their own research project aligned with the laboratory interests through the Wild Card option (see form). Requirements: Research Field Chemistry » Instrumental techniques Education Level Master Degree or equivalent Research Field Chemistry » Analytical chemistry Education Level Master Degree or equivalent Research Field Pharmacological sciences Education Level Master Degree or equivalent Research Field Chemistry » Physical chemistry Education Level Master Degree or equivalent Research Field Physics » Biophysics Education Level Master Degree or equivalent Skills/Qualifications We seek an outstanding and highly motivated candidate holding either a Master's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences or related disciplines. Exceptional PhD holders will also be considered. Strong understanding of molecular structure, intermolecular interactions, biomolecular folding and interest in oligonucleotide chemistry and therapeutics. Experience in mass spectrometry, native MS, ion mobility, oligonucleotide characterization, structural biophysics, molecular modelling or data analysis is an asset. Languages ENGLISH Level Excellent Internal Application form(s) needed Form_call2027_LASTNAME_1.pdf English (291.93 KB - PDF) Download Additional Information: Benefits The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary and international research environment at the University of Geneva. The laboratory provides access to state-of-the-art instrumentation in ion mobility spectrometry, mass spectrometry, native mass spectrometry, ion activation methods and ion spectroscopy. Researchers will have opportunities to present their work at international conferences and to collaborate with academic and industrial partners. Salary and employment conditions follow the regulations of the University of Geneva and depend on the candidate's qualification level (PhD student or postdoctoral researcher). Eligibility criteria For PhD applicants, a Master's degree (or equivalent) must be obtained before the starting date. For postdoctoral applicants, a PhD degree must be obtained before the starting date. The starting date is flexible during 2027 . Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Selection process Applications must strictly comply with the application instructions provided in the FORM, and include all requested documents. Applications that are incomplete, do not follow the required format, exceed the requested length limitations, or do not clearly identify the selected project will not be considered further. The position will remain open until filled. Review of applications will begin after the application deadline. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview and, where feasible, to a final on-site interview. References may be contacted before the final selection.
