Description

Offer Description: 1 Research Initiation Grant (M/F) Call open for applications for a Research Initiation Grant within the framework of project DIFCATO3 -- Development of catalytic diffusers for ozone-driven water treatment, reference 2023.11502.PEX, with DOI https://doi.org/10.54499/2023.11502.PEX , funded by national funds through FCT/MECI, under the following conditions: Scientific Area : Engineering Sciences and Technology Admission requirements : To be a student enrolled in a higher technical professional course, a bachelor's degree, in an integrated master's degree or in a master’s degree, in the area of Chemical Engineering or related areas, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract. Or To be holder of an academic degree (bachelor's degree) enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract. If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of august 16th, and any formalities established there must be fulfilled until the time of signing the contract. In accordance with article 5º of the Regulation of Research Grants of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.: the scholarship can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with this scholarship contract, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of one year in that typology of scholarship, followed or interpolated. The grant cannot be awarded to anyone who has already benefited from research grants directly or indirectly funded by FCT, awarded under the terms of Research Grant Holder Status Activity Outline: Given the increasing pollution of water resources, it is essential to develop advanced water treatment techniques capable of addressing current environmental challenges. At LSRE-LCM, one of the research focuses is advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), which use oxidizing agents to remove persistent pollutants from water. The efficiency of ozonation can be increased through the use of catalysts capable of promoting the conversion of ozone into more reactive oxidizing species and/or facilitating surface oxidation mechanisms. Although several metal catalysts exhibit high activity, the potential leaching of metals into the treated water constitutes a limitation to their application. Carbon-based materials thus emerge as a promising alternative, as they can combine catalytic activity, stability, and the potential for production from renewable raw materials. In this context, the utilization of residual biomass for the production of carbon-based materials allows for the integration of catalyst development for water treatment with the valorization of biological resources. In particular, algal biomass is an attractive raw material for the preparation of carbonaceous materials, whose composition and surface properties can be tailored through carbonization and activation conditions. The efficiency of ozonation can be increased through the use of catalysts capable of promoting the conversion of ozone into more reactive oxidizing species and/or facilitating surface oxidation mechanisms.
