PhD Student or Postdoctoral Researcher - Coupling Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry and Ion Spectroscopy for Chirality Measurements (ERC Advanced Grant CHIRAMASS)

University of Geneva

Deadline

15 November 2026

Description

Offer Description: The ERC-funded project CHIRAMASS aims to develop new analytical approaches for chirality measurements by coupling ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) with gas-phase ion spectroscopy. The project seeks to establish innovative instrumentation and methodologies capable of probing the structure and chirality of molecular ions with unprecedented sensitivity and specificity. The successful candidate will join the Biophysical and Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Laboratory at the University of Geneva under the supervision of Prof. Valérie Gabelica. The research will involve the development and implementation of instrumentation combining ion mobility spectrometry, mass spectrometry, laser-based spectroscopy, and advanced ion manipulation methods. Applications will include structural characterization, chirality analysis, and fundamental studies of gas-phase ions relevant to chemistry, biology and pharmaceutical sciences. Depending on the candidate profile, the position may be offered at the PhD or postdoctoral level. Requirements: Research Field Chemistry Education Level Master Degree or equivalent Research Field Chemistry Education Level PhD or equivalent Research Field Physics Education Level Master Degree or equivalent Research Field Physics Education Level PhD or equivalent Research Field Engineering Education Level Master Degree or equivalent Research Field Engineering Education Level PhD or equivalent Skills/Qualifications We seek an outstanding and highly motivated candidate holding either a Master's degree (for PhD applicants) or a PhD degree (for postdoctoral applicants) in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or related disciplines, with an excellent academic record. For this mass spectrometry methodology development project, useful competencies include ion optics and simulations, vacuum systems, ion sources and mass analyzers, optics and lasers, instrument control programming, electronics and signal processing, prototype development, and gas-phase ion chemistry and spectroscopy. Experience with mass spectrometry instrumentation, numerical modelling, software development, lasers, spectroscopy, or related experimental techniques will be considered an asset. Languages ENGLISH Level Excellent Internal Application form(s) needed Form_call2027_LASTNAME.pdf English (291.93 KB - PDF) Download Additional Information: Benefits The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary and international research environment at the University of Geneva. The laboratory provides access to state-of-the-art instrumentation in ion mobility spectrometry, mass spectrometry, native mass spectrometry, ion activation methods and ion spectroscopy. Researchers will have opportunities to present their work at international conferences and to collaborate with academic and industrial partners. Salary and employment conditions follow the regulations of the University of Geneva and depend on the candidate's qualification level (PhD student or postdoctoral researcher). Eligibility criteria For PhD applicants, a Master's degree (or equivalent) must be obtained before the starting date. For postdoctoral applicants, a PhD degree must be obtained before the starting date. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Selection process Applications must strictly comply with the application instructions and include all requested documents including the FORM. Applications that are incomplete, do not follow the required format, exceed the requested length limitations, or do not clearly identify the selected project will not be considered further. The position will remain open until filled. Review of applications will begin after the application deadline. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview and, where feasible, to a final on-site interview. References may be contacted before the final selection.
