The proposed research focuses on the lived experiences and citizenship rights of people who are both neurodiverse and non-binary and/or neurodiverse and intersex. Neuroqueerness can be seen as a creative process that challenges social norms, and an embodied practice. However, there is a gap in research about intersex and neurodiversity. Little is known about how non-binary neuroqueer people navigate the world, especially in relation to citizenship and rights. The project will include attention to intersectionality, wellbeing and anti-discrimination as part of its focus. It is particularly timely, given the increasing levels of discrimination against intersex people, gender and sexual minorities and people with disabilities, and the need to foreground the interests and wellbeing of these groups. The applicant: For this collaboration, you will need to have a PhD in a social science or health-related subject (Sociology, Politics, Social Policy, Psychology, Health Sciences or a related subject), relevant academic publications, and research experience and/or experience of working with the groups of people that the research refers to. The co-design process that is central to the funding stream will facilitate the successful candidate to develop in their own innovative ideas and shape the project, within the broad parameters set above. Candidates with lived experience are very welcome to apply. The selected candidate will work jointly with Professor Surya Monro and colleagues at Loughborough [pronounced Luff-buh-ruh] University to develop the MSCA-PF proposal. This will include the scientific element (background and rationale), research methodology, development of secondments at relevant organisations, training programme, pathway to impact, dissemination strategy and career development plan. The host organisation: The University of Loughborough is research-intensive, with extensive experience of international research projects, and previous success in gaining Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Postdoctoral Fellowships. It has a QS ranking of 203, placing the University amongst the best internationally. The School of Social Sciences and Humanities, where the successful applicant will be located, is highly interdisciplinary. 85% of its research across five disciplinary units is recognised as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ according to the latest UK REF (UK-based quality assessment). We have a critical mass of scholars working on issues of gender, sexuality, and medical sociology, spread across the School of Human and Health Sciences and beyond, in disciplines including Sociology, Political Science, English and Law. The lead academic, Professor Surya Monro https://www.lboro.ac.uk/subjects/social-policy-studies/staff/surya-monro/ has an excellent record of success with MSCA funding and project delivery, working in collaboration with intersex, non-binary and other colleagues. Her publications and experience of delivering complex projects will form a solid foundation for work on this new funding bid.
