Offer Description: 1 (one) Research Fellowship (BI) for PhD Student 1 Research Fellowship(s) (BI) is(are) open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências , funded by own funding for the development of R&D projects in the field of renewable energy engineering, under the following conditions: Scientific Area : Environmental Engineering Admission requirements : Master Degree. Additional optional skills and qualifications : Experience in research projects in the area of renewable energies, including experience with the participation of stakeholders in co-creation and modelling activities of distributed and digital energy systems. Experience in research and/or innovation projects focused on energy communities and approaches focused on energy democracy. Good knowledge of programming language (preferably Python) for optimization, machine learning, data processing and visualization. Experience of collaborative tools for software development (version control with git, repositories). Knowledge of open models and technologies, free and open-source software. Good knowledge of online document collection and digital archive search tools as well as data processing and storage. Good knowledge of public policies and legislation in the field of energy, digitalization, data, artificial intelligence and privacy in Portugal and Europe, including European directives. Contracting requirements : Presentation of the academic qualifications and/or diplomas, if applicable. Enrolment in Doctoral Program (leading to the PhD degree). Work plan : The energy transition is simultaneously a digital transition, due to the growing adoption of digital technologies in the operation of the grid, in the management of flexible resources and in the mediation of relationships between energy consumers, markets, companies, regulatory bodies and service providers. In this context, terms such as "Internet of Energy", smart homes or smart grids are present in the public discourses of companies and governments, in official technological roadmaps and in the agendas of regulatory bodies. However, it is hypothesized that the phenomena currently visible on the internet and in the digital space (AI, big data, automation, the trend to make everything "smart") are reproducing, in the energy sector, the same economic and technological dynamics: digital surveillance, economic concentration, monopolies and privacy issues. The work plan focuses on mapping the digital landscape of the current energy transition from the perspective of energy democracy and sustainability. Specifically, the focus is on mapping the components and dynamics of the digital dimension of the energy transition — based on peer-reviewed scientific articles, research project deliverables, software or hardware projects, as well as documentation and real smart grid projects. This review aims to lead to the development of guidelines for a digital energy transition based on energy democracy and a 100% renewable energy system; as well as the publication of research articles and technical papers. Legislation framework : Legislation framework : This call is governed by the Research Fellowship Holder Statute , approved by Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended; by the FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships , as currently in force, amended and republished by the Notice (Extract) No. 412/2026/2 (available at: https://diariodarepublica.pt/dr/detalhe/aviso-extrato/412-2026-996320857 and https://www.fct.pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/ ); and by the FCiências.ID Regulation for Research Fellowships, approved on 12 May 2020 (available at Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da FCiências.ID ).
