Design and synthesis of first- and second-generation Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) for advanced applications in emerging organic contaminants capture processes
Universidad Complutense de Madrid
Deadline
6 November 2026
Description
Offer Description: One-year full-time research position (Personal de Apoyo a la Investigación - PLI) is available at the Department of Organic Chemistry, Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Spain. The successful candidate will join the research group to work under the framework of the project "Design and synthesis of first- and second-generation Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) for advanced applications in emerging organic contaminants capture processes" (Project Reference: CMOFs4water-CM / TEC-2024/ECO-332), funded by the Comunidad de Madrid through the 2024 R&D Activities Program in Technologies (Concession Order 5696/2024, December 10). Job Description & Core Tasks: Aligned with the goals of Work Package 2 (WP2), the researcher will be responsible for the development, optimization, and characterization of novel second-generation Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) tailored for emerging organic contaminants capture in aqueous media. The specific schedule of tasks for the year 2027 covers: T1.1 - T1.3: Design, chemical synthesis, and structural characterization (FTIR, NMR, MS) of innovative functionalized monomers suitable for post-synthetic modifications. T1.4 - T1.5: Development, scaling, and optimizing of post-synthetic chemical modifications on pristine COF networks. T1.6: Comprehensive physicochemical, structural, and spectroscopic characterization of the modified COF architectures. T2.1 - T2.3: Organic design and solvothermal synthesis of tetrahedral 3D monomers for the production of advanced three-dimensional frameworks (3D-COFs) [Context]. T2.4: Structural, textural, and spectroscopic characterization of the newly developed 3D-COFs. Parallelly, the candidate will actively collaborate in cross-cutting activities across WP3, WP4, and WP5, including the optimization of materials for mechanical properties screening, contaminant capture assays, and scale-up processing under real-world application conditions. Requirements: Research Field Chemistry Education Level Bachelor Degree or equivalent Specific Requirements Section 1: Research Experience in COFs Proven research experience in the molecular design, solvothermal chemical synthesis, and structural characterization of Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) for the development of advanced crystalline porous materials. Practical experience in advanced organic synthesis and post-synthetic chemical modification of porous frameworks. Section 2: Instrumental Techniques and Specialized Training Hands-on expertise in solid-state characterization techniques, specifically Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (SS-NMR / CP-MAS), Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD), and supercritical CO₂ activation processes of porous networks. Demonstrated experience in photophysical, structural, and nanomaterial characterization using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). Section 3: Scientific Track Record and Project Fit Scientific publications, international conference communications, and research stays or internships at Public Research Organizations (OPIs) within the project's specific research field. Specialized training in scientific data processing software (such as Origin), chemical databases (Reaxys/SciFinder), and technical maintenance of specialized laboratory equipment and vacuum systems.
