PhD position in numerical analysis for high-dimensional function approximation

KU Leuven

Deadline

31 December 2026

Description

Offer Description: There are a lot of algorithms to approximate high-dimensional functions. They often are based on samples. We consider the case in which the sample nodes can be chosen and are interested in worst-case errors of e.g. the L2 error over the unit ball of a weighted Sobolev space of dominating mixed smoothness. We are in particular interested in structured point sets from quasi-Monte Carlo methods. The candidate has a master degree in Mathematical Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science or equivalent with a strong desire to mathematically analyse when and how a numerical algorithm works. The PhD program in Leuven is a 4 year program. The initial contract is for one year. After nine months the student is evaluated and the outcome determines if the PhD program can be continued. For more information please contact Prof. dr. ir. Dirk Nuyens, mail: [email protected] .
