Descrizione
Quantum computing promises breakthroughs in chemistry, materials science, and optimization, but today’s devices are still too small and error-prone to solve real-world problems. To bridge this gap, classical simulation methods are crucial: they help us understand the capabilities of quantum hardware, guide its development, and indicate where genuine quantum advantage can be expected.
The PROQSY project (PROpagation algorithms for simulating Quantum SYstems) will develop a unified framework for propagation algorithms, a recently introduced family of methods for simulating quantum systems on classical computers. These algorithms track how key quantities evolve step by step through a quantum computation and have already shown striking success in simulating today’s devices.
PROQSY pursues three goals: (i) extend propagation to new quantum platforms such as photonics and continuous-time processes, relevant for quantum chemistry and quantum optics; (ii) design propagation techniques for preparing equilibrium states of quantum systems, an essential tool for molecular design and combinatorial optimization; and (iii) develop hybrid approaches that combine classical propagation with quantum computations, enabling complex simulations beyond the reach of either approach alone.
By bridging quantum information, computer science, and mathematical physics, PROQSY will establish propagation as a versatile simulation paradigm. The results will broaden the scope of near-term quantum devices while also creating new quantum-inspired classical algorithms, with potential applications in materials discovery, drug development, and combinatorial optimization.
Settori: classical simulation of quantum systems, quantum algorithms, quantum information theory
