Zeolites are microporous materials consisting of connected silica and alumina tetrahedra. They are key for the production of millions of tons of products as they are considered performance materials in catalysis and separation, guiding the transition to a circular carbon economy. Today, from myriads of possible compositions and combinations of tetrahedra, 270 different zeolite frameworks are documented, yet only about 15 of them are actually applied (or tried in applications) on an industrial (or larger scale) level, only tuned to fossil fuel-based industrial (catalytic) needs. However, urgent societal challenges, such as the drive to a circular carbon economy, CO2 capture and energy-demanding separations, call for novel materials. Although in academia about 5 new frameworks are discovered annually in the zeolite field, unfortunately, in the past two decades, none (or one) of these wonderful materials have been reported in any upscale tests or brought closer to commercialization. There is a clear gap between academic findings and larger-scale syntheses and applications of prospective materials, which could prove critical in the transition to circular feedstock.
R-U-ZEALOUS proposes a concept for an upscaling zeolite synthesis reactor, featuring a novel stirring device in form of a modular tool. This will enable us to bridge the gap between research (<20 mL) and application by (a) studying zeolite synthesis on pre-pilot scale (2L) including analysis of improved thermal and mass gradients; (b) trialing our Electro-Assisted Synthesis invention at a larger scale; (c) synthesizing upscaled amount of two specific materials of interest (praised in the literature but never tested) and providing them to some of the 5 stakeholders on board. The reactor and its demonstrations would allow the behavior prediction of crystallization systems on larger pilot scales and attract future stakeholders.
