Descrizione
At the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland, protons are collided at the highest energies ever produced in a laboratory, allowing the basic building blocks of matter and the forces that govern them to be studied. With this award, the group at the University of Chicago will help operate and upgrade the ATLAS experiment, one of the scientific instruments that records these collisions, and to analyze the data they produce. The instruments and computing tools developed for this work must sift through enormous streams of data in real time and pick out the rare, interesting events. This is a challenge shared with fields far beyond physics, from medical imaging to autonomous systems, so that the techniques created here are expected to have benefits well beyond particle physics. Through this effort, undergraduates students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers are trained in advanced electronics, data science, and machine learning, building a skilled technical workforce for the nation. Public understanding of science is also advanced through classroom visits, lectures, hands-on analysis of real collider data by high-school students, and a program that helps military veterans prepare for college study in science and engineering.
This support furthers a coherent program of instrumentation, algorithm development, and physics analysis with the ATLAS experiment, in preparation for the High-Luminosity upgrade of the LHC. Instrumentation efforts include the operation and calibration of the hadronic calorimeter (TileCal) and its upgraded front-end electronics, the development of calorimeter-based hardware trigger systems (the global Feature Extractor (gFEX) and its successor, the Global Event Processor (GEP)) in which machine-learning algorithms are implemented on field-programmable gate arrays to identify boosted hadronic decays in high-pileup conditions. Analysis efforts include testing and probing the Standard Model of particle physics for potential cracks, including searches for supersymmetric partners of the axion (axinos) through displaced-vertex signatures, studies of the Higgs sector through di-Higgs production in the four-b-quark final state, and measurements of quantum entanglement and toponium formation in top-quark pairs using physics-inspired neural-network architectures. The development of AI-enabled analysis platforms is also supported, through which large-scale distributed computing is made accessible for interactive analysis and for broad public use of open collider data.
This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
