Abstract:
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is probing physics at the largest energies ever reached in a particle accelerator. There are four major experiments at the LHC, including the ATLAS experiment. Michigan State University (MSU) is one of the US institutions that is involved In the construction and operation of the ATLAS experiment, using the data taken to conduct physics analyses, probing physics topics such as the properties of the Higgs boson, precision measurements of standard model processes and searches for physics beyond the standard model. The LHC and the ATLAS experiment are currently involved in a long shutdown meant to upgrade the ability to increase the amount of data taken, allowing more precise measurements to be taken and a larger range of physics beyond the standard model to be probed. This work is being conducted by five faculty at MSU, along with four postdoctoral research associates, four graduate students and a number of undergraduate students. This work is made possible using funding from the National Science Foundation.
The LHC is both a discovery and a precision machine. The MSU group is pursuing analyses related to the properties of the Higgs boson, of the top quark of electroweak physics and of searches for physics beyond the standard model. The physics analyses can be broadly grouped into five general categories: the search for new heavy resonances, the study of Higgs boson production and decay, the precision differential cross section measurements of high mass Drell-Yan pairs, the physics of top quark production, and the study of strong interactions, especially jet production in association with bosons and heavy quarks. The MSU group is involved in upgrades to the ATLAS detector intended to take advantage of the higher luminosities expected during the HL-LHC running. In the next three year period covered by this grant, we will be utilizing our expertise in electronics, detector construction, software development, statistics and high energy theory to carry out these goals.
