SAGL aims to produce a complete study of the sexual vocabulary that Greeks of the past included in their own lexica. In a time when gender and sexuality in antiquity get more and more attention, the scientific community needs reliable reference works about ancient sexual vocabulary. While Latinists can count on Adams’ Latin Sexual Vocabulary (Baltimore 1982), Greek scholars always had to consult works based on single genres, such as Jeffrey Henderson’s "The Maculate Muse. Obscene Language in Attic Comedy" (New Haven 1975/Oxford 1991). Such volumes were never meant to be a comprehensive guide to Greek sexual lexicon, a kind of instrument that SAGL will generate for the first time.
Through a preliminary database search, I confirmed that the Greek lexical tradition can yield the most complete collection of Greek sexual terms to date, including those already attested in the surviving literature. Through a series of keyword searches in the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, I will compile a comprehensive corpus of glosses on sexual terms to analyze simultaneously from two perspectives: on the one hand, I will examine the origin, history, usage, functions, and implications of each term individually. On the other hand, I will investigate what our glosses say about the relationship of the lexical tradition with sexuality, about its sources, and its taboos. In order to follow these two lines of research, I need to bring together methods from different disciplines, such as classical and Byzantine philology, linguistics, rhetoric, gender studies, and digital humanities.
Sorbonne Université will allow me to reach these goals by providing me with training in database management, Byzantine culture, and Gender studies. In turn, I will contribute to the training of MA and PHD students through thesis supervision, guest lectures, and a research seminar. A similar two-way transfer will happen during my secondment at the Department of Philology at NKUA in Athens.
