Descrizione
The continuous increase in global energy demands – whether to power the electrical grid, store information in the cloud or train cutting-edge artificial intelligence – requires more efficient means to generate, store and use energy. In that regard, spintronics aims to improve areas in microelectronics where energy is lost during the processing, manipulation or storage of information. The fundamental goal of STUMM (Switching and Topology of Unconventional Magnetic Materials) is to theoretically describe new ways to store and process information through understanding the transport and topological properties of novel unconventional magnetic materials, such as materials described by spin-group symmetries, including altermagnets. Altermagnets are materials that share properties from both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, and are excellent candidates for next-generation magnetic memories. STUMM will use state-of-the-art quantum transport methods to investigate unique and effective ways to control and switch magnetic order in altermagnets. STUMM will also produce an open-source package to automatically generate theoretical models of altermagnets so the research community can focus on their physics instead of their modeling. Finally, STUMM will explore the stability of topological states, which are able to carry information without dissipation, protected by spin-group symmetries. Thus, STUMM will provide experimental guidance and expectations about measuring such novel topological states. The applicant will gain expertise in powerful computational techniques, learn code development practices and solve important open questions in the field of unconventional magnetism. Due to the international collaborations and broad network of Prof. Roche and ICN2, the applicant will increase their professional visibility and position themselves as a recognized leader in the field, thereby supporting their transition to become a group leader.
