Martingale Foundation finds, funds, and supports people from low-socioeconomic backgrounds to pursue postgraduate degrees at leading universities across the UK. As postgraduate qualifications become increasingly vital for academic and career advancement, our mission is to ensure that talented students facing financial barriers can access and thrive in postgraduate study. In collaboration with Wellcome, Royal Society and Pousaz Philanthropy, Martingale will address a critical evidence gap in access to postgraduate study for students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. While there is a wealth of evidence on access to undergraduate education, research on postgraduate progression remains limited, with fragmented datasets and a lack of robust evidence. Martingale will work with Public First, a policy and strategy consultancy, to analyse HESA data, examining how factors including socioeconomic background, undergraduate institution and parental education, impact progression to postgraduate study. The report will set out a clear picture of the current postgraduate landscape, and make practical, evidence- based recommendations for government and key sector bodies, including universities, OfS, and UKRI. By providing clear evidence of current progression rates into postgraduate study, this study will inform national policy and encourage stakeholders at all levels to address current inequalities and ensure that all students, regardless of background, can pursue research.
