The Bridges to the Baccalaureate (B2B) Research Training Program at Howard University and Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) is designed to increase the number of students who successfully transition from community college to four-year institutions and pursue careers in biomedical research. Through a collaborative partnership between Howard University and BCCC, the program provides a structured pathway that integrates academic preparation, research training, mentoring, transfer support, and professional development.
The program supports students pursuing associate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines at BCCC. Participants receive individualized mentoring, academic enrichment, research readiness training, and career development support designed to strengthen their preparation for advanced study in biomedical and behavioral sciences. A central component of the program is a mentored summer research experience at Howard University, where trainees conduct research under the supervision of faculty investigators and participate in seminars, workshops, and scientific presentations.
Additional program components include curriculum enhancement activities, skills-development workshops, transfer preparation, and ongoing academic and career advising. Following completion of their associate degrees, trainees are supported in transferring to four-year institutions to pursue bachelor's degrees in STEM disciplines and continue along pathways leading to biomedical research careers.
The long-term goal of the Bridges to the Baccalaureate Research Training Program is to strengthen the national biomedical research workforce by providing rigorous research training, mentoring, and educational opportunities that prepare community college students for successful transfer, degree completion, and advancement into research-intensive careers.
