The Port of Cork is expanding its deep-water facilities at Ringaskiddy with support from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport, reinforcing one of Ireland's key maritime gateways on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The project will increase port capacity, accommodate larger vessels and ensure more efficient, sustainable maritime transport, while strengthening Ireland's connectivity with the rest of Europe. As Ireland's economy and trade continue to grow, the Port of Cork is investing in new infrastructure to overcome capacity constraints at its existing city-centre facilities. Current operations at the Cork City quays and Tivoli docks are limited by tidal depth and channel width, restricting access for vessels longer than 155 metres and during limited tidal windows. To address these challenges, the Port of Cork Company is relocating its container and bulk cargo operations to its deep-water port at Ringaskiddy by 2027. With CEF Transport support, the project is delivering two new quay berths: a 170-metre extension to the Cork Container Terminal (CCT2) a 182-metre Deepwater Berth Extension (DWB). The upgraded facilities will accommodate larger coastal vessels and post-Panamax container ships, significantly increasing the port's operational flexibility and efficiency. The new infrastructure will enable an additional 350 ship calls at Ringaskiddy, strengthening maritime connections between Ireland and the rest of the European Union. The new facilities are being developed to high standards of sustainability, automation and smart technology, helping future-proof the port for changing transport and environmental requirements. By removing existing operational bottlenecks, the project will improve the reliability, safety and resilience of maritime transport while ensuring continued efficient access to the TEN-T network. The increased capacity will also support future growth in freight volumes and enhance the Port of Cork's role as a strategic logistics hub for Ireland. The Ringaskiddy expansion is a key investment in Ireland's transport infrastructure, ensuring that the Port of Cork can continue to support international trade while providing modern, resilient and sustainable maritime services.
