Funding About our funding We distributed over £50 million of funding in 2024 to support UK and international academic research, career development and wider engagement across the humanities and social sciences. Our funding takes the form of project grants and individual fellowships, with a focus on researchers at key stages in their careers. From the early career Postdoctoral Fellowships to Mid-Career Fellowships, Senior Research Fellowships and Professorships, we give opportunities for curiosity-driven research that highlights public engagement and knowledge exchange, talent development and innovation. Objectives of Academy Research Funding Open for applications Closing date: 26 August 2026 Mid-Career Fellowships The Mid-Career Fellowships are designed both to support outstanding individual researchers with excellent research proposals, and to promote public understanding and engagement with humanities and social sciences. Closing date: 8 September 2026 APEX Awards The APEX awards are a new funding opportunity designed to promote collaboration across academic disciplines through the support of world-leading interdisciplinary research projects. Closing date: 15 September 2026 SHAPE Involve and Engage A funding programme for innovative public engagement from the British Academy. Closing date: 16 September 2026 The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and The British Academy Knowledge Frontiers Symposium 2027 The British Academy is inviting applications for early career researchers in the humanities and social sciences to attend a research collaboration symposium on the broad theme of ‘Humans and Nature: More resilient towards the future’, in partnership with The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Closing date: 30 September 2026 Postdoctoral Fellowships The British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships is a three year award made to an annual cohort of outstanding early career researchers in the humanities or social sciences. Closing date: 7 October 2026 Talent Development Awards 2026-27 The Talent Development Awards are available to promote the acquisition and advancement of skills in relevant areas by UK-based researchers, promoting innovative research methods, be that through skills development, collaboration or dissemination. Closing date: 7 October 2026 International Interdisciplinary Research Projects 2027 The programme aims to support projects which engage with questions concerning the relationship between expertise, public understanding and policy delivery internationally, and highlight the importance of collaboration between communities of practice, disciplines, capacities and borders. Closing date: 14 October 2026 Global Innovation Fellowships: The German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) 2026-27 Global Innovation Fellowships provide opportunities to UK-based early- and mid-career researchers from across the humanities and social sciences to develop their skills, networks and careers in the creative and cultural, public, private and policy sectors to address challenges that require innovative approaches and solutions. Additional Needs The British Academy has set aside specific funding to support any additional needs that applicants and award holders may require.
