The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) News Strengthening emergency health response capacities in West Africa 25 August 2026 Fully equipped ambulances are bringing vital healthcare closer to communities across 12 countries. Share this article on Social Media Facebook Linkedin Twitter Mail Global Goals supported: Procured by UNOPS with funding from the West African Health Organisation, 30 new, fully equipped ambulances are on their way to 12 member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The ambulances will help strengthen health systems, improve access to emergency care and advance universal health coverage in Benin, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. As part of the initiative, UNOPS also held a three-day training session for representatives of the 12 ECOWAS member states receiving the ambulances, in collaboration with the Togolese Red Cross. Participants acquired essential technical expertise in operating the ambulances and using the onboard medical equipment through theoretical training sessions and practical exercises. The initiative is bolstering emergency health response capacities, marking a significant step towards improving access to emergency care and achieving universal health coverage across the region's health systems.
