Descrizione
The SATNET-IoT project addresses the significant challenges of extending IoT connectivity through satellite networks, particularly in remote areas where terrestrial coverage is insufficient. With terrestrial networks covering only 25% of the global landmass, satellite-based IoT solutions have become crucial for achieving any-time, any-device connectivity. The rise of non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellites, with their lower latency and improved data transfer speeds, offers promising opportunities for IoT communication. However, performing orbital simulations to know the exact locations of the satellites for each of them is time-consuming and computationally complex. Also, any new solution analysed based on specific satellite orbits cannot be generalized for other constellations. SATNET-IoT aims to utilize stochastic geometry for developing a mathematical framework to analyze the potential improvements in coverage across different regions and times offered by satellite networks, without requiring precise orbital data. The existing IoT communication protocols are also not designed to manage the dynamic, intermittent coverage inherent to satellite networks, nor do they account for the higher propagation delays and rapidly changing topology. SATNET-IoT aims to overcome these challenges by developing novel medium access control (MAC) layer protocols, ensuring efficient transmission scheduling and resource allocation within limited satellite visibility windows. The developed stochastic geometry framework and algorithms will be validated by deploying a real-time IoT network for air quality monitoring using software-defined radio to emulate satellite constellations.
