However, their performance depends not only on their chemistry but also on their architecture. In this study, the Action investigated how engineering the structural architecture of ZIF-8 can improve mass transfer and surface accessibility. By transforming the conventional 3D framework into multilayered and partially exfoliated architectures, the researchers enhanced the accessibility of adsorption sites and accelerated the removal of toxic organic pollutants. The optimized architectures also maintained higher performance during intermediate reuse cycles, remained effective for the removal of multiple pollutants in mixtures, and could be efficiently regenerated. These findings highlight how controlling MOF architecture can unlock more efficient and reusable materials for sustainable water purification.
