PROJECT SUMMARY
Extreme heat and drought threaten progress in tuberculosis (TB) and HIV control by exacerbating food insecurity,
disrupting health systems, and creating new barriers to care for already vulnerable populations. People living
with HIV and those at risk for TB are disproportionately affected by these environmental-related stressors,
particularly in low-resource settings where health systems have limited capacity to adapt. Despite growing
evidence linking extreme weather events, including extreme heat and drought, to adverse TB and HIV outcomes,
there is little actionable guidance on how to design, implement, and evaluate drought and extreme heat adaptive
service delivery strategies that can sustain TB and HIV care under worsening environmental conditions.
The overall objective of this K01 application is to develop Dr. Christian into an independent investigator with
expertise in environmental epidemiology and implementation science to design and evaluate drought and
extreme heat adaptive TB and HIV service delivery strategies. The proposed mentored research will characterize
the impact of extreme heat and drought on TB and HIV outcomes in Zimbabwe, identify adaptation strategies
through stakeholder-engaged mixed methods research, and pilot a drought and extreme heat adaptive service
delivery intervention in a community health setting in Zimbabwe. This work will leverage long-standing
partnerships with the Organization for Public Health Interventions and Development in Zimbabwe and existing
programmatic and environmental data infrastructure to generate actionable, context-specific evidence.
Dr. Christian’s career goal is to become an independent investigator focused on improving TB and HIV outcomes
in high-burden settings by designing interventions to address challenges related to drought and other extreme
weather events. To support this research, the candidate will receive structured training in environmental
epidemiology, implementation science frameworks and intervention development, discrete choice experiments,
and pragmatic study design. A multidisciplinary mentorship team will guide both the research and training
components, ensuring rigorous methodological development and progression toward independence. Completion
of this K01 award will position the candidate to lead an independent research program focused on strengthening
TB and HIV service delivery in the context of environmental stress and to successfully compete for R01-level
funding to evaluate scalable, drought and extreme heat adaptive infectious disease interventions in high-burden
settings.
