"The overall aim of the MUSICA project is to Bring Sustainability to Small Islands through a unique system that provides clean energy generation (wind, solar, and wave), drinking water (turning sea water into clean potable water through nano-ultrafiltration), and support for sustainable fish farming further offshore. This will be achieved by accelerating the commercialization of its Multi-Use Platform (MUP) and Multi-use of Space (MUS). The project seeks to de-risk the solution for future operators and investors by validating it to Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL7) and providing concrete plans for mass-market commercialization. The MUSICA solution is designed to be a decarbonizing one-stop shop for small islands, their marine initiatives, and ecosystems.
This goal will be achieved by developing a replicable, smart MUP. The core idea is a platform that combines clean energy generation, water desalination, and aquaculture support to promote the multi-use of valuable sea space. MUSICA will advance the existing MUP concept, currently at TRL5, which was developed by the University of the Aegean (UoAeg) and EcoWindWater (EWW) with funding from FP7. This original platform was successfully trialed in Heraclea for two years starting in 2010, funded by a €2.8M FP7 grant.
The project aligns with the Blue Growth initiative by utilizing ocean resources to promote clean energy, sustainable water management, and responsible fish farming. MUSICA provides a full suite of solutions for small islands:
-Renewable Energy: It combines three forms of renewable energy—wind, PV, and wave. This non-correlated supply provides high RES penetration and competitively affordable electricity.
-Energy Storage: Innovative on-MUP storage systems, including compressed water/air and batteries, will provide all required power storage for the island and platform, as well as smooth the electrical output.
-Smart Energy System: The project includes a smart energy system for the island with demand response, modeling, and forecasting capabilities.
-Water Desalination: A desalination unit on the MUP, powered by renewable energy, will turn seawater into fresh, potable water for the island through nano-ultrafiltration.
-Aquaculture Support: The MUP will provide ""green"" support services for a pilot offshore aquaculture project.
MUSICA will demonstrate that its MUP is a viable enabling infrastructure where multiple services can share the same space, work synergistically, and share supply chains. This approach reduces operating and maintenance costs while solving the increasing demand for space.
The project embraces Responsible Research and Innovation by actively involving islanders to ensure their needs are addressed. It fosters knowledge networks that form a ""quadruple helix"" (QH) structure, which includes citizens, industry, research, and government.
The key goals are to:
-Develop and test the system on the real island of Oinousses, Greece, to ensure its effectiveness.
-Make the system readily available and attractive for other islands to adopt by reducing risks for future operators and investors.
-Create a long-lasting, sustainable solution that benefits the environment, economy, and social well-being of island communities."
