Descrizione
LawBord is a study of why pro-migrant grassroots civil society organisations (CSOs) use the law in border areas – the borderlands. It focuses on four distinct EU and US borders, comparing opportunities to use the law as a means of political activism (i.e. legal mobilisation) in different Global North borderlands.
The project builds on the idea that the geopolitical (structural, material and relational) characteristics of border areas create unique opportunities and limitations for pro-migrant CSOs, shaping their forms of action, including their decision to engage in legal mobilisation. By explaining why legal mobilisation around migration (increasingly) takes place in borderlands, LawBord fills an important gap and brings a key theoretical contribution, based on an innovative approach to the geopolitics of borderlands as a source of opportunities and constraints in terms of political activism.
This project is extremely timely and societally relevant, given the increasing deadliness of migration routes across the globe, which has also been addressed by the UNSDGs. In this context, pro-migrant initiatives have acquired a key role in defending human rights and safe mobility, easily becoming the target of repressive policies. LawBord can therefore offer innovative and unique insights into and potential solutions for the contentious politics of borderlands from a bottom-up perspective.
LawBord is fully interdisciplinary and brings together three research fields: migration and border studies; contentious politics studies; socio-legal studies. This will prime the project to engage with theories and methods from political science, sociology and law scholarships. In theoretical terms, LawBord will adopt political and legal opportunity structure perspectives. From a methodological viewpoint, the project will be mostly based on qualitative techniques (field observation, semi-structured interviews, document analysis) and some quantitative ones (surveys).
