Europe’s critical infrastructures, such as power grids, mobility systems, and logistics, face growing pressure from climate extremes, cyber threats, and digital transformation. Recent large-scale blackouts and system disruptions have revealed how local disturbances can rapidly cascade into widespread crises, highlighting the urgent need for resilient, real-time coordination across interconnected systems.
The RADON project will address this challenge by developing a unified co-design framework that integrates control, learning, and optimization for distributed decision-making. Instead of relying on fragile centralized architectures, the proposed framework will enable agents to coordinate locally while adapting to faults, delays, and evolving conditions. By jointly embedding risk-aware predictive control, data-driven uncertainty modeling, and distributed optimization into a single scalable architecture, our approach will ensure safe, adaptive, and resource-efficient operation in dynamic environments.
The project is structured into three parts. First, it will develop models of uncertainty and fault scenarios to design predictive controllers that adapt safely to changing conditions. Second, it will propose fast and lightweight distributed optimization methods that enable reliable coordination across heterogeneous edge devices. Third, it will release open-source tools and validate the approaches through hardware-in-the-loop experiments with the French transmission operator RTE, alongside large-scale studies in intelligent transportation.
Beyond its scientific contributions, RADON will strengthen the fellow’s expertise in risk-aware control, distributed optimization, and real-time systems, while building leadership in open-source research and industrial collaboration. Its outcomes, from algorithms to deployable tools, will directly support Europe’s Green Deal and Digital Europe priorities by advancing resilient energy, sustainable mobility, and secure infrastructures.
