MICROLIGHT - Microbial Interactions and Community Responses to Light
This project aims to explore light-mediated microbial interactions within the phycosphere, the microenvironment surrounding marine phytoplankton. By focusing on the interaction between the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and the bacteria Silicibacter sp., I will investigate how light influences microbial behavior, communication, and nutrient exchange. The study will use an innovative microfluidic platform, the "Phycosphere-on-a-Chip," integrated with upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and a spatial light modulator (SLM) to create controlled light environments mimicking natural conditions.
The project is structured around three work packages: the development of the microfluidic platform, the examination of microbial behaviors under controlled light conditions, and the adaptation of advanced imaging techniques, in-situ holographic microscopy, to study these interactions in natural marine environments. This interdisciplinary approach combines marine biology, optics, and microfluidics to uncover the biophysical mechanisms underlying light-mediated microbial interactions.
The outcomes will provide new insights into microbial ecology, specifically the role of light in influencing microbial dynamics within marine ecosystems. The findings could have broader implications for understanding marine biogeochemical cycles, algal bloom dynamics, and the development of innovative biotechnological applications.
