Global fits of electron–proton and proton–proton scattering data are essential to unveil the multidimensional structure of hadrons and to describe the interplay between parton dynamics and hadronization, two manifestations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Transverse-Momentum-Dependent (TMD) factorization provides the appropriate framework to describe processes such as semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell–Yan, where transverse degrees of freedom play a crucial role. In this context, TMD parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) must be extracted from experimental data through global analyses.
Despite recent progress, current TMD extractions are affected by model assumptions, limited uncertainty propagation, and a lack of systematic validation procedures. This proposal, “TMDream – Transverse Momentum Distributions: Robust Extraction and Methodology Application”, aims at building a flexible and statistically controlled framework for the extraction of TMDs, based on neural-network parametrisations, replica methods, and closure testing techniques. The project will focus on the simultaneous fit of unpolarized TMD PDFs and FFs from SIDIS and Drell–Yan data, using ensemble methods and hyperparameter optimization to quantify model dependence and methodological correlations.
In a second stage, the framework will be applied to the extraction of the Sivers function, a polarized TMD encoding spin-orbit correlations in the nucleon. The impact of different QCD evolution schemes (twist-2 vs twist-3) will be studied, along with tests of universality across SIDIS and Drell–Yan processes.
The researcher will complement his expertise in QCD phenomenology and hadron structure with training in modern computational tools and uncertainty quantification, benefiting from the research environment at CEA Paris-Saclay and collaborations with the TMD community.
