Descrizione
The EU is advancing energy transition and environmental sustainability through the development of geothermal energy, geological storage of CO2, hydrogen, and compressed gas, as well as deep wastewater reinjection. Quantitative, multiscale characterisation and scalable monitoring of fluid flow in underground reservoirs are crucial for managing risks including induced seismicity, subsidence, and fluid or gas leakage. Yet, subsurface reservoirs often act as a "black box", limiting our ability to obtain detailed information on fluid migration and local pressure buildup. The PORFLOW project seeks to address this challenge by advancing the understanding of fluid flow in deformed sedimentary rocks and developing scalable monitoring techniques that connect laboratory findings to field applications. Prof. Renard's expertise in 4D synchrotron X-ray tomography, combined with my experience in distributed optical fiber sensing technology, will provide strong synergies to achieve these goals. The project will adopt an interdisciplinary approach, integrating solid and fluid mechanics, geosciences, computational science, and intelligent monitoring to deliver unprecedented insights and predictive tools. The research outcomes will help bridge existing knowledge gaps and establish scalable monitoring methodologies, thereby contributing to data-rich, predictive reservoir management systems that support efficient and reliable decision-making. In addition, the project will provide advanced training to enhance my technical, analytical, and leadership skills while fostering sustainable collaborations with my host institution (UiO) and three secondments (ESRF, FOMON GmbH, and GFZ). By combining structured training in both scientific and transferable skills with opportunities to expand my professional network, the project will accelerate my progression toward becoming an independent and internationally competitive researcher, both within and beyond academia.
