Descrizione
Cyclic polymers possess distinctive physical attributes and have broad utility (e.g., self-assembly, surface functionalization, biomedical materials). Subsequent to the pioneering work by Grubbs and co-workers, who converted cyclooctene (COE) to cyclic poly-alkenes, additional Ru, W, Mo, and V complexes have been used to improve efficiency and polymer molecular weight. Nonetheless, major limitations persist: monomer scope remains; these include the requirement for strained olefins, substrate-dependent and difficult-to-control stereochemical outcome, and a lack of mechanistic understanding regarding the factors that impact molecular weight, dispersity, and distribution modality.
The proposed project will utilize a new class of cyclic Mo/W-alkylidene complexes, recently developed in the host group, to develop a method for kinetically controlled ring-expansion metathesis polymerization (REMP) of cyclo-alkene monomers. Our aim is to introduce a mechanism-based approach to synthesis of Z-rich cyclic polyalkenes with controllable molecular weight, dispersity (Đ), and distribution modality. The Study will cover REMP of unstrained cyclic alkenes, including cyclohexene, thereby considerably broadening monomer scope. We will elucidate and then harness polymer tacticity, based on the principle that repeat-unit stereochemistry critically influences material properties. The resulting advances will enable access to stereo-defined cyclic polymers with tunable architectures; this lays the groundwork for next-generation materials across advanced manufacturing, coatings, and biomedical applications.
