The University Program in Genetics and Genomics (UPGG) transcends departmental boundaries
at Duke University thereby providing a stellar interdisciplinary training environment that unites
faculty and graduate students with varied skills and expertise through the shared interest of
genetics and genomics. UPGG is one of the longest training programs at Duke, active for over 40
years. The program’s longevity is a testament to its adaptation and incorporation of rapid changes
in experimental and computational technologies, as well as in training methodologies. UPGG
currently comprises 97 faculty committed to training 64 students. UPGG faculty train students in
scholarly endeavors on a broad range of genetics and genomics topics including chromosomes,
nucleic acids, gene expression, developmental genetics, population and evolutionary genetics,
model systems genetics, human genetics, plant genetics, and microbial/viral genetics. UPGG
students develop experimental and quantitative skills by applying them to many kinds of biological
organisms, such as prokaryotes, fungi, plants and animals. Student thesis topics span from
fundamental biology to human disease. UPGG’s strength is derived not only from the variety of
research topics and scientific approaches, but also the team science atmosphere that permeates
Duke within and across academic units. UPGG Alumni pursue a wide spectrum of biomedical
careers, including academic science, teaching, industry, government and science
communication. Current UPGG trainees bring a large continuum of scientific and life experiences
to our program, thereby enriching our perspectives in genetics and genomics and improving
our research mission. UPGG trainees are active participants in their own training in order to
develop leadership skills needed for successful careers. This includes organizing retreats, our
Distinguished Lecture Series and selection of speakers for the Tuesday Seminar Series. These
signature UPGG events build connection across our UPGG community, spanning many
departments at Duke. In the current grant period, we developed comprehensive assessments of
our training goals, enabling us to rapidly identify areas of excellence and those needing adaptation
to ensure student success. In the next grant period, we will harness those data to strengthen
research skills in scientific reasoning and collaboration, and maintain a high graduation rate. We
will continue to build technical, operational and professional skills in our trainees through genetics
and genomics research questions, while ensuring a training environment in which all students can
excel and pursue a wide range of future biomedical careers.
