This proposal requests the renewal of a T32 Chemistry Biology Interface (CBI) training program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), which has been active since 2021. This program draws from both the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry (CBMC) and the Department of Chemistry, both of which are located on the main campus and have a long history of collaboration, a strong faculty base, and a pool of talented students. By bringing students from these two units together for cross-disciplinary training, the program enables trainees to obtain the breadth of scientific training essential for modern, mechanistically informed chemical biology. The program aims to train emerging chemists for interdisciplinary biomedical research by (1) recruiting top students with strong academic backgrounds, (2) offering coursework on research ethics, responsible conduct, and rigor/reproducibility (R&R), (3) holding biweekly trainee meetings which incorporate trainee presentations, literature discussions, professional development discussions and Q&A sessions with career experts, (4) organizing annual events including orientation and retreats, and (5) prepare trainees for internship opportunities. Together, these activities help trainees in different divisions assimilate the outstanding basic science that they learn in their respective academic programs with interdisciplinary approaches at the chemistry/biology interface and integrate perspectives on contemporary issues regarding rigor and responsible research conduct into their thinking. UNC, ranked 10th nationally in federally funded life sciences research, provides an exceptional training environment. At the end of their first year, students will be recruited from the two primary units and from a UNC umbrella biological/biomedical sciences program that has shown remarkable success in recruiting outstanding graduate students to the campus. Program support will be for two years during their second and third year of their graduate studies. In this renewal request, we seek to expand the program from six to eight trainee positions. This program will provide trainees with a superior education from the perspectives of both depth and breadth, and will develop well-trained PhD scholars at the interface of chemistry and biology who will play a critical role in the biomedical sciences across academia and industry.
