Abstract
The University of Michigan Research Training Program in Endocrinology and Metabolism, now in its 49th
continuous year, prepares postdoctoral MD and MD/PhD scientists for careers as academic investigators in the
broad discipline of endocrinology and metabolism. This program recruits talented applicants from several pools,
before, during, or after clinical fellowship, to pursue structured, mentored, and rigorous research training with
established and successful faculty members, which ranges from basic research to translational clinical
investigation and patient-oriented health services research. This training includes instruction in experimental and
study design; laboratory and clinical investigation techniques; survey methodology and qualitative research
methods; data analysis and statistical methods; writing abstracts, posters, manuscripts, grant proposals, and
reports; preparing and delivering oral presentations; rigor and reproducibility; and responsible conduct of
research. The major themes of research include metabolism, energy balance, and exercise; pathophysiology of
diabetes and its complications; hormone production and clinical manifestations; and endocrine gland
development, neoplasia, and management. Our mission is to prepare the next generation of academic physician-
scientists for successful careers in basic, translational, and patient-oriented research in endocrine-related
disciplines. We have developed a program that combines unparalleled clinical training opportunities, a spectrum
of outstanding research opportunities, and individualized mentoring for postgraduate scholars possessing MD,
MD/PhD, or equivalent degrees, for at least 2 years of protected research training. The program features 24
experienced faculty mentors with external funding and vibrant research programs. The PI and Associate Director
oversee the program through the governance of Internal and External Advisory Committees, which are separate
from but function in parallel to the Fellowship Steering Committee.
