Program Summary
Graduate Training in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology (GTMCP) at the University of Wisconsin (UW)-
Madison aims to provide rigorous predoctoral training to students specifically interested in quantitative and
systems Pharmacology, including the interdisciplinary areas of Neuropharmacology, Cancer Pharmacology,
Cardiovascular Pharmacology, Immunopharmacology, and Endocrine Pharmacology. GTMCP operates within
the UW Center for Training in Pharmacology and Drug Development (CTPDD) to synergistically bring together
interdepartmental faculty, students and scientists from across our campus for collaboration and the advancement
of Pharmacology research. GTMCP specifically provides trainees with the skills necessary to enter careers
related to the Pharmacological Sciences in academia, industry, government, and science education. Discovering
new approaches to drug delivery, understanding mechanisms of drug action, and developing novel drugs as
therapeutics are cornerstones of the program. The internally and externally evaluated GTMCP curriculum
delivers foundational knowledge in Pharmacology, including the principles of pharmacokinetics,
pharmacodynamics, drug-receptor interactions, and drug metabolism. How drugs impact biological systems, as
well as their therapeutic value, is highly stressed, as is quantitative thinking and the value of multiomics.
Additional coursework is centered on the critical importance of rigor and reproducibility, responsible conduct of
research, safety within the laboratory, robust statistical analysis, and grant writing. We strongly believe that these
elements are crucial to promote the development of trained PhD scientists who can contribute to the biomedical
research workforce. GTMCP has 40 dedicated faculty trainers from 18 departments, whose interests focus on
understanding the molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms by which drugs or natural ligands interact
with cellular receptors to activate signaling pathways. Our well-funded faculty collaborate extensively to create
a highly interactive network, and all have a commitment to mentoring students in Pharmacology, evidenced in
part by their participation in a minimum of 8 hours of in-person research mentor training, which emphasizes the
importance of strong mentor-mentee relationships and creating safe research environments. GTMCP receives
strong institutional support to facilitate trainee professional development. All trainees are provided regular
opportunities to develop excellent oral presentation skills and invite external scientists from top institutions across
the country. Research retreats and symposia offer additional opportunities for students to host and interact with
prominent members of the Pharmacology community and develop networking skills. GTMCP boasts a high
retention rate, a rapid time to degree, and an outstanding record of trainee publications. Twelve slots to support
trainees during years 1 and 2 of their graduate education
