Project Summary/Abstract
The mission of the Duke University Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) program is to provide our students with a safe, rigorous, supportive, and accessible training experience that imparts the technical, operational, and professional skills needed to become independent and valuable members of the biomedical workforce. Unique at Duke, CMB is an interdisciplinary Ph.D. training program that allows students to explore the varied landscape of biomedical research at the University before committing to a specific research focus. CMB was founded as an admitting program in 1975 and converted to a comprehensive degree-granting Ph.D. program in 2022. The first-semester curriculum is modular to promote intellectual exploration. The spring curriculum focuses on experimental design and modern cell and molecular techniques. Students complete at least three lab rotations in the first year to choose a mentor for thesis research. In the second year, a fall grant-writing course is required, and a written thesis proposal must be orally presented and defended by the end of the spring semester. Additional in-depth training is obtained through elective courses and thesis research. Students receive extensive instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research and in Rigor and Reproducibility, integrated throughout the program, with lab safety training required yearly. Student progress and program efficacy are tracked and assessed using a novel software platform developed at Duke. To enrich the training experience and promote teamwork and leadership, CMB students engage in formal peer mentoring, organize annual recruitment activities, and plan a yearly research symposium that brings extramural experts to Duke and showcases CMB students’ research accomplishments. CMB is led by a Director and a Director of Graduate Studies who embody the breadth of scientific expertise within the program and have complementary strengths. Additional program oversight is provided by a Steering Committee that broadly represents the constituent faculty. There are ~140 CMB member faculty, each of whom is required to complete an evidence-based mentoring curriculum before training students. CMB receives over 200 student applications yearly, which are reviewed using a standardized, holistic rubric, with GRE scores optional. There are currently 106 CMB-affiliated graduate students at Duke, 77 of whom are training grant-eligible. This group size creates a strong intellectual and social network that enhances multidisciplinary scientific collaborations. Selected students are supported by this training grant in years two and three, with 16 slots requested in this application, commensurate with the size and uniqueness of the CMB program, complementary institutional support, and the recent addition of new streams of CMB trainees from admitting programs. The median time-to-degree for CMB students over the prior 15 years was 6.0 years, and extensive professional development resources
