PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT
This three-year K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award focuses
on improving adolescents’ access to high-quality reproductive health care. Currently, only 60%
of adolescent girls in the United States use their preferred contraceptive method. Person-
centered contraceptive counseling, defined as respectful care centered on the patient’s values,
is associated with improved contraceptive use and satisfaction. However, only one-third of
adolescents and young adults currently receive person-centered contraceptive care. This
indicates a need to improve how contraceptive care is delivered in clinical settings. The
proposed project includes a pilot study in four pediatric primary care clinics to evaluate (1)
implementation outcomes (feasibility, acceptability, appropriateness, fidelity, adoption) and (2)
preliminary effectiveness of the Contraceptive Adolescent-Centered Counseling and
Empowerment Skills for Success (ACCESS) program. Contraceptive ACCESS is a multi-
component, clinic-based program designed to promote person-centered contraceptive care that
was co-developed with adolescents, clinicians, and caregivers. The proposed training and
research, alongside a team of mentors and advisors, will help the PI build essential skills and
collect preliminary data to conduct a future hybrid effectiveness-implementation cluster-
randomized trial of Contraceptive ACCESS and other clinic-based reproductive health
programs. It will also support launching the PI’s independent clinician-researcher career
dedicated to the development, implementation, and evaluation of rigorous, adolescent-centered
interventions. The proposed work contributes to the evidence base for adolescent-centered
primary care delivery and enhances the understanding of factors that influence preferred
contraceptive method use—ultimately contributing to improved reproductive health outcomes for
adolescents.
