VBAID PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT
This application proposes the establishment of the Vaccines and Biologics Against Infectious Diseases (VBAID) Training Program in the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI), home to an outstanding group of faculty mentors working on a myriad of infectious diseases. The VBAID T32 program will provide a unique training program for postdoctoral trainees at DHVI in Duke University School of Medicine where they will have exposure to basic and translational science research that includes understanding pathogens at the cellular and molecular levels, and pathogenesis studies that informs the design, development and testing of candidate vaccines and biologics against pathogens in preclinical animal studies and human clinical trials; all within the DHVI, thus providing an academic environment with many enrichment opportunities. The diverse portfolio of topics in infectious diseases research provides a wide range of opportunities for trainees to work with the scientists who comprise the VBAID faculty.
Objectives and Rationale. Our vision is to provide an innovative program in vaccines and biologics development built upon state-of-the art interdisciplinary training and technology for the next generation of scientists. Our training program will equip postdoctoral scientists to be at the forefront of designing solutions to emerging threats impacting public health. The DHVI and associated faculty members are at the forefront of developing solutions to combat the most challenging epidemics including HIV, Emerging Coronaviruses, Influenza, Tuberculosis, and Flaviviruses, among others.
Research Training Program. Trainees engage in the program for up to three-year appointments and choose a Program track: I. Host immunity to pathogens for antibody discovery and to inform vaccine design; II. Vaccine Development Against Viral Infections; and III. Maternal/Pediatric Immunity. Trainees can also select from one or more “Enrichment Opportunities”: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Biostatistics and Artificial Intelligence, Good Manufacturing Process and Quality Assurance, Clinical Trials and Biocontainment Research. Trainees must complete required training activities such as Training in Responsible Conduct of Research, Training in Human and Animal Research and Data Integrity. Additionally, through the well-established DHVI Training and Mentoring Program (DTMP), trainees will have exposure to courses including but not limited to Scientific Writing, Grant Development, Weekly Journal Clubs, State of the Art Technology Training, Statistics and Informatics courses, Research Presentation Skills and Scientific Communication to the General Public. With this award, we anticipate training 3 post-doctoral PhD level researchers to successfully lead high impact research.
