Many healthcare and laboratory facilities required rehabilitation, updated equipment, and automated systems to keep pace with growing public health demands. To address these challenges, the government of Uzbekistan ‒ supported by $160 million in financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) ‒ engaged UNOPS to execute the COVID-19 Emergency Response Project (2022–2026). Projects achieve their greatest impact when they strengthen national systems and empower local institutions to lead. That is the foundation of our partnership with the government of Uzbekistan. Implemented in close partnership with the Committee for Sanitary and Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health under the Ministry of Health, the project will benefit over 36 million people across Uzbekistan. Initiatives include: Rehabilitating and constructing 45 new healthcare and laboratory facilities nationwide in line with modern biosafety standards. Equipping 204 healthcare institutions with state-of-the-art medical and laboratory equipment. Integrating advanced digital health platforms, including Laboratory Information System (LIS) and the Information System for Epidemiological Monitoring of Infectious Diseases (ISEMID). Training 5,000 healthcare workers, laboratory specialists and technical personnel in biosafety, infection control, and diagnostic systems.
